Fixes #761.

run_loop and new_thread (and with it thread_pool) wait for the top of their queue with wait_for(lock, top - now, pred). That deadline is fixed when the wait starts. If another thread queues a schedulable that is due earlier, the notification wakes the worker, the predicate finds the new top not yet due, and the wait goes on until the old deadline. The new schedulable then runs late, together with the old one.

Change. Both workers wait with wait_until(lock, top->get_timepoint(), pred). The predicate also returns true when the top of the queue is a different schedulable, the queue is empty, or the top is disposed, so the loop recomputes the wait from the current top.

Unlike the snippet in the issue, the new_thread predicate does not check is_stoping. After the last worker handle is gone, the thread keeps draining its queue, so a predicate that is true once stopping turns the wait for a pending timer into a busy loop. With rpp::source::timer(2s, rpp::schedulers::new_thread{}), the process used 2029 ms of CPU in 2.5 s with that check and 21 ms without it, the same as today.

Test. New case in test_scheduler.cpp, "timer queued while the worker waits for a later one runs at its own time", for run_loop and new_thread. A schedulable due in 3 s is pending, then one due in 50 ms is queued from another thread. It must run within 1 s.

  • before: fails in both subcases, CHECK( 2899800047ns < 1s ) and CHECK( 2899859687ns < 1s )
  • after: passes, 50.2 ms and 50.1 ms

All 49 rpp test executables pass, and test_scheduler is also clean under ThreadSanitizer (GCC 14.2, Debian trixie; gRPC, Qt and asio tests not built).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed delayed task scheduling so that adding an earlier-due task wakes the scheduler and allows it to run promptly, rather than waiting for a previously scheduled later task.
    • Improved responsiveness when the next scheduled task changes or the queue becomes empty, ensuring the scheduler recalculates its wait time and handles due tasks sooner.

📝 Walkthrough

The run_loop and new_thread schedulers now wait against the current queue-top deadline and wake when the queue top changes, the queue empties, or relevant disposal and due-time conditions occur. Regression tests cover adding an earlier timer while a later timer is pending.

Changes: Scheduler timer wake-up

Layer / File(s) Summary
Re-evaluate timed waits when the queue top changes
src/rpp/rpp/schedulers/run_loop.hpp, src/rpp/rpp/schedulers/new_thread.hpp, src/tests/rpp/test_scheduler.cpp
Both schedulers use wait_until and wake to recalculate the wait when the queue changes or the current top item is disposed or due. Tests check that an earlier timer runs while a later timer remains pending.

Explanation

Issue #761 requires earlier-due schedulables to run at their own deadline in run_loop and new_thread, including thread_pool workers that use new_thread. In run_loop::state_t::pop, the code now uses wait_until with the current top time point. Its predicate detects queue empty, top replacement, disposal, and readiness. In new_thread::state_t::data_thread, the code uses the same re-evaluation pattern and does not include the stopping-state condition that would cause a busy loop while draining. The supplied change summary reports a regression test for both schedulers. The reported test result is about 50 ms, within the one-second limit. The thread_pool behavior follows from its existing new_thread worker implementation.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed source files implement the wait-deadline correction for issue #761. The added test_scheduler.cpp case verifies the required behavior for run_loop and new_thread. No unrelated production or test changes appear in the supplied pull request summary.

A rabbit queued a timer bright,
Then watched the worker wake just right.
The nearer task ran without delay,
While later clocks still ticked away.
The rabbit thumped, then hopped from sight.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the original top alive during the wait.

If another thread removes a disposed top through dispatch_if_ready() and a newly queued schedulable reuses its address, m_queue.top().get() != top remains false. The waiter can then miss the new top and sleep until the old deadline. Save the top as a shared_ptr and compare against top.get() so its address cannot be reused during this wait. The queue’s pop() removes its ownership of the old top. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
