💡 Codex Review
OpenKyrozen/openkyrozen/agent/delegation.py
Lines 541 to 544 in d1702dd
If a reviewer returns verified after inspecting evidence but omits one declared artifact, these lines change the verdict to changes_requested; the outer loop then invokes the worker again with that review as author feedback. The previous review runner instead issued bounded artifact-inspection reminders in the same reviewer context. A compliant worker can now consume all three correction cycles and finish unverified solely because successive reviewers missed an artifact, while also incurring unnecessary worker calls.

Make directory ownership conflicts recursive
When an assignment scopes an existing directory, this permits writes to every descendant, but Delegation._owned_paths() and WorkspaceAccess.claim() still reserve only the literal directory path. Consequently assignments scoped to src/ and src/pkg/—or a parent write beneath src/—can run concurrently and interleave reads and writes to the same files, defeating the promised overlapping-ownership serialization and potentially producing last-writer-wins results. Directory scopes need recursive ownership conflict checks, not only recursive access authorization.

Preserve delegated transcripts in coordinator inspection
Running the child through chat() stores its transcript as conversation events in the child session, but nothing now calls coordinator.add_message(). Delegation.detail() still builds messages and review_messages exclusively from parent-scoped subagent.message events, so /agents, the API, and the inspector return empty author/reviewer histories for these new AgentEngine runs even though the conversations exist elsewhere. Bridge the child conversation into the coordinator or teach detail() to read the child sessions.

Bypass foreground bug-fix rewriting for child reports
Putting workers in Agent mode also enables the foreground bug-fix workflow. When an assignment contains common terms such as bug or error, _prepare_fix_workflow() starts that workflow, and _advance_fix_workflow() can replace the required JSON report with its plain-text blocked response whenever the child says fixed or verified before satisfying the foreground reproduction/hypothesis stages. report() then rejects the replacement and the delegated run fails even if its tools and independent review would otherwise be valid; child runs should not rewrite their structured result through this foreground-only workflow.

Restore bounded repairs for malformed delegated JSON
The old structured runner validated worker and reviewer reports and made two model repair calls when JSON was malformed or required fields were missing. chat() accepts any non-tool final text, and the profile.metadata["structured"] flag is not consumed by AgentEngine, so _work_owned() now calls report() once and immediately fails the run on a recoverable formatting error—even though the resulting error still claims repairs occurred. Add the bounded structured-report repair step around the AgentEngine result.

Enforce each sub-agent profile's max_steps
Delegated execution through chat() no longer uses AgentProfile.max_steps; AgentEngine instead applies the runtime-wide MAX_STEPS_PER_TURN value of 50. Thus the built-in 12-step profiles, and custom profiles configured with smaller limits, can execute many more provider/tool rounds than their advertised safety bound, while profiles configured above 50 are truncated early. Propagate the selected profile's step allowance into the child engine.

Settle follow-up budgets from only new usage
For send_subagent, the worker reuses the original run_id as its usage-ledger run ID, so _subagent_usage_metrics() returns cumulative cost from every prior assignment handled by that agent. Although send() clears run["usage"], it cannot clear those durable attempts, and this settlement therefore charges the new follow-up reservation for all historical spend. Reusing an expensive agent can make a cheap follow-up exhaust the current parent-turn budget and reject unrelated assignments; settlement needs a per-attempt baseline or a fresh usage run ID.

Require scoped source evidence before skipping review
For a narrow read-only assignment, this accepts any successful receipt from the listed actions, including an unrelated search_web or read_webpage, without checking that the assigned file was inspected or that the assignment's acceptance criteria were exercised. A worker assigned parser.py can therefore cite a web-search receipt in its evidence and be marked succeeded with no independent review despite never reading parser.py. Bind the qualifying receipts to the declared scope and required acceptance checks before using this fast path.

Allow reserved runs to finish when pricing is unknown
After the first successful call on a provider absent from PROVIDER_COSTS, _track_cost() records cost_picos=None, marks the run unknown, and this check rejects every subsequent model call. Most supported alternate providers—including GLM, Kimi, OpenRouter, Groq, Mistral, xAI, Together, Fireworks, Cohere, Azure, Perplexity, Bedrock, Vertex, and custom profiles—therefore cannot complete a normal tool-call round, because producing the final report requires a second call. Unknown usage should retain the reservation without making the already-reserved child or reviewer unusable.

Validate artifacts before widening reviewer file access
The worker's model-generated artifacts array is copied directly into the reviewer's file-read allowlist without proving that the worker created or was authorized to access those paths. A compromised or hallucinating worker scoped to one harmless file can declare .env or another sensitive workspace file as an artifact; the reviewer is explicitly instructed to read it and will send its contents to the review provider. Only grant this exception for artifacts bound to successful authorized worker write receipts or paths approved by the parent assignment.

Record child receipts before propagating provider failure
If a child successfully executes a tool and the following native model request fails, chat() returns the Native model request failed: response and these lines raise before querying or forwarding the child's persisted execution.receipt events. The run is then marked failed with no coordinator receipts even though a write or other side effect may already have occurred, leaving /agents, dependency handling, and the parent report without an audit trail of the mutation. Collect and publish new receipts in a failure-safe path before raising.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Failed or cancelled work settles at zero cost and releases real spend.
_work runs only when _work_owned raised outside its own handler. It is mostly the claim wait or a cancellation. A settle at 0 is correct if no model call happened. It is wrong if the run already issued provider calls. Use the known usage cost, as in the _work_owned finally block. Use None if usage is unknown.

Closes #254
Delegated work used a separate legacy runner, so workers did not inherit the canonical AgentEngine’s native tool, context, receipt, or completion behavior. Assignment boundaries also missed reads and nested directory ownership, and child/reviewer usage was not consistently reserved or attributed.
Workers and reviewers now execute through AgentEngine with isolated sessions and profile-specific step limits. File reads and writes stay within assigned paths; nested scopes serialize with each other and with workspace-wide operations. Reviewer file access is limited to assigned source evidence and artifacts bound to successful worker writes. Scoped read-only assignments can complete through receipt-bound parent checks; other assignments receive independent review. Malformed reports get two bounded, tool-free repairs, incomplete artifact inspection gets bounded reviewer retries, and receipts survive provider failures after side effects. Follow-up assignments use distinct usage identities and child turns cannot rewrite their structured report through the foreground bug-fix workflow.
I chose the canonical engine and existing event/receipt stores over maintaining a second sub-agent execution loop. The #245 reviewed-plan identity fix is already on main; this PR is based on current main and is not stacked.
Validation on
ec2c9e091109eb3d945a661708567b5826365154: GitHub CI passed 1,021 tests (5 skipped), browser and agent workflow acceptance, Linux/macOS/Windows installed-update checks, clean wheel/TUI acceptance, Docker persistence, and installer syntax. Localmake lint, make check, make docs-check, subagent acceptance, TUI acceptance, and focused regressions passed. The commit is signed and GPG-verified.Risk: No live provider calls were made. Unknown provider pricing keeps the full reservation held but cannot provide exact per-token spend enforcement; profile step limits still bound the number of model rounds. Cross-platform V3 soak and release gates remain follow-up work.
