The fuzz suite now uses Effect's native Arbitrary for schema-shaped values and codec properties, while retaining constrained SQL generators and independent database/model oracles. This expands missing literal coverage, exercises queries over generated tables, and adds Postgres migration fuzzing.

  • Derive nested JSON, UUID and boolean inputs from schemas, and verify composed/compiled row codecs with native shrinking and replay. Malformed wire rows must fail with the typed decode error.
  • Require every public type export to have a literal property or an explicit exemption; run literals against both ClickHouse settings. Cover float4 extremes/subnormals, timestamp string variants, wrappers, brands and custom descriptors.
  • Generate empty tables, duplicate join keys, NULL notes and tenant distributions alongside deeper query plans. Preserve deterministic pagination and preflight constant arithmetic over empty inputs.
  • Vary SQLite/D1 migration text, numbers and blobs, and compare Postgres schema transitions with fresh creation and retained scalar/JSON/array rows. Postgres transitions currently keep column types fixed; enum/type-change/rename fuzzing is outside this property.
  • Reject zero/invalid budgets, all-discarded properties and interrupted budgets. Fix SQLite's accidental 1900 timestamp bound and timestamp replay-key collisions.

Validation: build and typecheck pass; the full suite on live ClickHouse 26.2.19.43 passes 1,427 tests plus documentation checks. A full live suite also passed on 26.8.2.7; a 5× seed-20261026 fuzz soak passed 266 tests on 26.8, followed by focused checks for the final float4 and harness changes. Additional seeded query/migration soaks and independent reviews passed.

A generated-fixture regression exposed a ClickHouse 26.2 DISTINCT/OFFSET bug over constant UNION ALL sources. Fixtures now use the existing core suite's values() representation, with the shrunk case pinned. This changes tests and documentation only.

Walkthrough

The fuzz suite now supports Effect-native arbitraries and replay, generated query fixtures, and expanded literal, migration, codec, and registry properties across database dialects.

Changes: Fuzz suite expansion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fuzz harness and generator contracts
tests/fuzz/harness.ts, tests/fuzz/harness.test.ts, tests/fuzz/values.ts, docs/testing.md, tests/fuzz/README.md
The harness accepts fast-check and Effect arbitraries, validates run budgets, and supports replay tokens for Effect properties. Value definitions support both arbitrary types and add constrained nested JSON payloads.
Dialect literal and registry coverage
tests/fuzz/dialects/*, tests/fuzz/literal-inventory.ts, tests/fuzz/literals.fuzz.test.ts, tests/fuzz/registry.fuzz.test.ts, tests/fuzz/regressions.ts, docs/testing.md, tests/fuzz/README.md
Literal catalogs add schema-shaped cases across dialects, and literal tests run against configured targets with optional value normalization. Registry tests check public type exports against literal coverage and exemptions.
Generated fixtures and query properties
tests/fuzz/fixtures.ts, tests/fuzz/model.ts, tests/fuzz/plan.ts, tests/fuzz/queries.fuzz.test.ts, tests/fuzz/regressions.ts, docs/testing.md
The model and query properties accept generated fixtures. Added cases cover empty data, duplicate join keys, ordering, pagination, and generated plans and unions.
Migration payload and schema properties
tests/fuzz/migrations.fuzz.test.ts, tests/fuzz/migrations.postgres.fuzz.test.ts, docs/testing.md
SQLite migration properties use varied generated payloads and preserve nulls, bytes, and arrays during row comparisons. A Postgres property compares fresh and migrated schemas and checks retained rows.
Codec round-trip and malformed-wire properties
tests/fuzz/codecs.fuzz.test.ts, docs/testing.md, tests/fuzz/README.md
Codec properties cover schema round trips, compiled row encoding and decoding, malformed wire rows, and numeric inputs represented as numbers or strings.

  • MapleTechLabs/effect-orm#88: The changes use schema-based arbitraries to generate values for property tests, matching the issue’s request for schema-based seeding and property-test inputs.
Merge Risk: Low · up to f50c1

This PR only changes fuzz tests and docs, so there is no production impact. Two small test-harness gaps are worth following up: native fuzz properties cannot yet skip known-issue inputs, and one Postgres numeric test does not exercise Postgres compilation. Neither blocks the merge.

Explanation

The title "test: expand fuzz coverage with Effect Arbitrary and generated data" matches the main change. The PR adds Effect-native Arbitrary support to the fuzz harness and codec tests, and generated query fixtures and migration fuzzing for SQLite and Postgres. The title is concise, uses the conventional "test:" prefix, and names the primary aspects of the change. It does not list every suite, which is acceptable for a title.

Preserve skip behavior for native properties.

When a native predicate throws Skip, nativeProperty passes it to Arbitrary.checkEffect as an Effect failure. The native check reports that input as falsified instead of discarding it. Handle Skip as a discard and preserve the all-discarded failure rule. Add a native skip test alongside the fast-check tests.

This is a latent harness gap, not a current suite failure. Current native predicates and pinned native inputs do not trigger skip() or skipKnown(). Downgrade this from a major issue to a recommended test-harness refactor.

Compile the Postgres case with PG.compileUnsafe.

The PG.float8 codec is already used to derive the row schema for decodeRows. The missing coverage is Postgres-dialect compilation. Use PG.compileUnsafe for the postgres case; changing CH.table is not required.
