Rebuilds #466 by @alan-roe on current main; the original no longer applied after the local query client moved to Effect's HTTP client and #1725 added MAPLE_LOCAL_ACCESS_TOKEN.

Problem

MAPLE_LOCAL_URL can point the CLI at a self-hosted maple start, but a proxy that checks its own credentials (Cloudflare Access on a tunnel, an auth gateway) refused every CLI request, and the CLI reported the proxy's sign-in page as a JSON parse error.

Change

All of it lives in the CLI's existing LocalAccessHttpClient hook, applied only to the MAPLE_LOCAL_URL origin, so the mode probe, the warehouse executor and maple query are covered by one change:

  • MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS: comma-separated name=value pairs, same format as OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_HEADERS. Sent on every path (a proxy guards /health too), never in place of a header the request already has, so content-type and the access token cannot be replaced.
  • cloudflared identity token: for an https server on another host with no Access credential set, the CLI runs cloudflared access token -app=<origin> once per command (5s cap, stderr ignored) and sends the result as cf-access-token. If cloudflared or its token is missing, it sends nothing extra.
  • Redirects from such a server are not followed, so a proxy's sign-in redirect fails as a redirect.
  • Typed error: a refused query becomes LocalServerAccessDeniedError, which names the fix. For Maple's own 401 (sign in required, now a shared constant) that is MAPLE_LOCAL_ACCESS_TOKEN; for a proxy it is cloudflared access login <origin> or MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS. A proxy is only blamed when the target is remote https, so a local 403 such as "browser origin not allowed" is not misreported.
  • Docs: "Behind an authenticating proxy" in reference/cli.md, plus the env table row.

@maple/query-engine is unchanged; the bundled local UI is unaffected.

Verification

  • apps/cli: local-access.test.ts (7 tests: header parsing, origin scoping, one cloudflared call across requests, service token skips cloudflared, loopback untouched, redirect / Maple 401 / local 403 classification) plus the existing core, remote-auth and outcome tests: 126 pass. Reverting the token cache or the remote-https gate makes the new tests fail.
  • tsrs --noEmit clean in apps/cli; oxlint -c .oxlintrc.effect.json clean on the changed files.
  • cloudflaredAccessToken against stub binaries: token read and trimmed (~0.4s), hung binary gives up at 5.0s and is killed, missing binary returns at once.
  • The real CLI against a self-signed https fake proxy on the LAN IP that 302s to *.cloudflareaccess.com without a token:
    • no credentials: error: https://<ip>:18443 redirected the request to a sign-in page before it reached Maple with the cloudflared/headers hint
    • stub cloudflared on PATH: maple query and maple services (executor path) both succeed; the proxy saw cf-access-token
    • MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS=CF-Access-Client-Id=…,CF-Access-Client-Secret=…,X-Team=obs: succeeds, all headers received, content-type: application/json intact

Not verified: a real Cloudflare Access application (the stub stood in for cloudflared and the proxy).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The CLI can send configured headers to the server specified by MAPLE_LOCAL_URL, without replacing headers it already sets or sending configured headers to other origins.
    • For remote HTTPS servers, the CLI can use a cached Cloudflare Access token when no Access credentials are configured.
    • Errors distinguish server access denials from connection failures and explain whether Maple or a proxy refused access, with guidance for resolving the issue.
  • Documentation
    • Added CLI reference guidance for configuring headers, using Cloudflare Access, and resolving proxy access errors.

MAPLE_LOCAL_URL can point the CLI at a self-hosted `maple start`, but a
proxy in front of it (Cloudflare Access on a tunnel) refused every
request, and the CLI reported its sign-in page as a JSON parse error.

The CLI's local HttpClient now, for the MAPLE_LOCAL_URL origin only:
- sends MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS (OTLP-style name=value pairs), never in
  place of a header the request already carries;
- for an https server on another host with no Access credential set,
asks `cloudflared access token` once per command (5s cap, silent when
  cloudflared or its token is missing) and sends it as cf-access-token;
- does not follow redirects from such a server.

Because this sits in the client, the mode probe, the warehouse executor
and `maple query` all get it. A refused query is a typed
LocalServerAccessDeniedError naming the fix: MAPLE_LOCAL_ACCESS_TOKEN
for Maple's own 401, cloudflared or MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS for a proxy.
Proxy blame only applies to remote https targets, so a 403 from a server
on this machine is not misreported.

Rebuilds #466 by @alan-roe on current main.

Scoping, the cloudflared cache and refusal classification are pinned by tests; the 5s cloudflared wait shows only in the root maple span, never as its own span.
no findings · tests covered · risk medium · 1/2 new units observable −1

Adds MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS and a cloudflared Access token to CLI requests on the MAPLE_LOCAL_URL origin, stops following redirects from a remote https local server, and types a refusal as LocalServerAccessDeniedError. Safe to merge. The open WarehouseAuthError issue in apps/cli/src/lib/errors.ts is a remote-workspace credential error and this diff does not touch it.

  • withLocalHeaders sends MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS on every path of the MAPLE_LOCAL_URL origin, existing headers winning
  • cloudflaredAccessToken asks cloudflared once per command for remote https, capped at 5s
  • Remote https local requests run with redirect: "manual" so a proxy's sign-in page fails as a redirect
  • localAccessDenial turns a 401/403/3xx into LocalServerAccessDeniedError, naming the access token or the proxy's fix

Over http, a followed redirect to another origin would carry the
MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS values (or the access token) with it. Redirects from
the target are now left unfollowed whenever the CLI adds any credential,
and a cf-access-token already on the request is kept.

Re the Maple review: the cloudflared lookup now has its own LocalAccess.cloudflaredToken client span with maple.cli.cloudflared.token_found (no token or host recorded), in 486403a. MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS needs no deploy config: it is an optional variable on the CLI user's machine and unset means no extra headers.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 9/10 · safe to merge
Credential scoping and manual redirects are origin-exact and pinned by tests; only the cloudflared helper lacks a test of its own.
2 notes · tests partial −1 · risk medium · 1/1 new units observable

Adds MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS, a cached cloudflared Access token and manual redirects to the CLI's local HTTP client, plus LocalServerAccessDeniedError naming the credential to set. Safe to merge; the open WarehouseAuthError issue is untouched by this diff.

  • localAccessClient sends MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS and cf-access-token to the MAPLE_LOCAL_URL origin only
  • Target-origin redirects are never followed while any credential is attached
  • A refused local query becomes LocalServerAccessDeniedError with the fix in its hint
  • LocalAccess.cloudflaredToken span records maple.cli.cloudflared.token_found

Findings

🔵 Note · F1 · cloudflared failures leave the new span looking successful

observability · STAT-02 · apps/cli/src/core/local-access.ts:123-130

A missing cloudflared, a non-zero exit and the 5s cap all collapse to Option.none, so LocalAccess.cloudflaredToken closes Ok with only maple.cli.cloudflared.token_found=false. Nothing says why: tapCause logs at debug, which the CLI suppresses without --debug, and timeoutOrElse resolves before tapCause sees any cause. A user who reports "cloudflared is installed but the CLI still gets the sign-in page" leaves a trace that cannot separate a stalled binary from a missing one.

Annotate the reason inside the span: the `orElse` branch sets e.g. `maple.cli.cloudflared.timed_out`, and the `tapCause` also records a short `maple.cli.cloudflared.error` (the cause's first line) next to the existing `logDebug`, so `token_found=false` is diagnosable in Maple.
🔵 Note · F2 · cloudflaredAccessToken trimming, exit code and timeout are untested

tests · apps/cli/src/core/local-access.test.ts:55

Everything else in this module is pinned here, but cloudflaredAccessToken is not: neither the trim, the exitCode === 0 && token !== "" check, nor the CLOUDFLARED_TIMEOUT cap has a test, and the PR verified them only against stub binaries. A regression that returns a whitespace token or never times out breaks every remote-https local server silently, since the client still degrades to "no credential".

Add a `describe("cloudflaredAccessToken")` with a stub `ChildProcessSpawner`: a padded token comes back trimmed, exit 1 or empty stdout gives `Option.none`, and a spawn that stalls resolves to `Option.none` after `CLOUDFLARED_TIMEOUT`.

Re the second Maple review, both notes done in df0f2c1: F1, the span records maple.cli.cloudflared.outcome (found / no_token + exit code / timeout / unavailable + the error's first line). F2, describe("cloudflaredAccessToken") runs the real spawner against stub scripts: padded token trimmed, exit 1 and empty output give none, a stalled binary times out, a missing binary is unavailable.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 10/10 · safe to merge
Credential scoping, redirect suppression, the one-shot cloudflared lookup and the refusal classification are each pinned by tests that fail when reverted, and the diff stays inside the CLI's local HTT…
no findings · tests covered · risk medium · 1/1 new units observable

Reaches a self-hosted server behind an auth proxy via MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS or a cached cloudflared access token, and reports a refusal as LocalServerAccessDeniedError instead of a JSON parse error. The open WarehouseAuthError issue in errors.ts is untouched: this adds a separate local-only error. Safe to merge.

  • MAPLE_LOCAL_HEADERS adds parsed name=value headers to every request on the MAPLE_LOCAL_URL origin only
  • cloudflared access token runs once per command and is sent as cf-access-token to remote https targets
  • Requests that carry credentials no longer follow a redirect away from the local target
  • classifyLocalAccess turns a 401/403 into LocalServerAccessDeniedError naming the fix

What was checked
  • localAccessDenial only blames a proxy for remote https targets, so the loopback 403 stays a plain LocalQueryFailed (local-access.ts:245, local-access.test.ts:274)
  • "sign in required" matches the body Maple's own unauthorized() returns (remote-auth.ts:135), keeping Maple's 401 distinct from a proxy's 403
  • The refusal branch chains LocalServerAccessDeniedError as cause of WarehouseDriverError (executor.ts:33), so the --json envelope keeps changing no contracts
