test(asr): verify timestamp consumers after #46 startup fix - #78
This PR is narrowed to checking timing consequences introduced by #46's first-chunk geometry change. The earlier revision also attempted to repair pre-existing EOF timestamp overruns and inconsistent audio_processed semantics. Those independent changes, including word-time backfilling, ITN provenance/reordering and subtitle-policy changes, have been withdrawn from the diff.
The approximately 70 ms VAD frontier mismatch was already fixed by c4d76edbefore #46 merged. This PR does not re-fix it or claim that every timestamp needs a 70 ms shift. It stays open as a draft follow-up; the current diff changes only two existing test files, with no production behavior changes.
Decoder token/word positions remain on the nominal encoder-frame grid. Token-silence endpointing compares positions in that same grid; a new utterance must not restart the absolute stream clock.
ITN, speaker attribution, SDK/API conversion and subtitle generation consume word intervals, not the VAD exclusive frontier. Source inspection found no additional use of the old N * sub frontier conversion in these paths. No blanket offset or EOF clamping is introduced here.
Offline/CTC and standalone diarization do not enter the changed cached first-chunk branch; VoiceChat perception uses the separate offline encoder path. Sharing encoder implementation code does not imply sharing that branch.
Within the inspected paths and tested CPU/Metal configurations, no further #46-induced timing defect has been established beyond the VAD correction already merged. This is not a claim that the repository has no other timing defects. Existing EOS-padding behavior and existing received/decoded-progress semantics are explicitly outside this follow-up.
Regression coverage added
Check cumulative decoder frame counts against independently assembled first/steady Mel chunks, including the distinction between the exclusive decoded frontier and emission positions.
Check that hard reset clears the frame clock, while EOU preserves it through the first-to-steady transition.
Use scripted, nonempty RNNT emissions at R0/R3/R6/R13 to check first-chunk word positions and absolute positions after EOU, without depending on a recording accidentally producing a token at a specific frame.
Validation
Existing CTest suite 14/14 passed (model-independent invocation); model-backed checks were additionally invoked explicitly.
CPU and Metal: updated geometry tests at R0/R3/R6/R13; existing VAD clock integration at all four R values, both before and after reset; R3 VAD masking; R13 token-silence/automatic/forced EOU controls. 14/14 model-backed invocations passed.
Validation used the same local Nemotron weights throughout, so it does not conflate #46's separate quantization change with the timing audit. CUDA/Vulkan and all network transports were not re-exercised in this narrowed audit. No new models, recordings, application changes, or unrelated bug fixes are included.
Bound runner result copies before postprocessing without changing tail decoding. Preserve backfill provenance through ITN and speaker handling, retain written order for equal timestamps, and cap exported intervals to original-rate input samples.
Report real decoded progress and cover EOF, EOU delivery, fractional durations, ITN remapping and result consumers with regression tests.

Expanded validation of streaming speech recognition timing across initial and subsequent audio chunks.
Added checks for timestamp continuity, end-of-utterance handling, and coordinate behavior after resets.
The PR adds C++ tests for cache-stream frame geometry and RNNT startup coordinates. The tests check emitted frame counts, decoded Mel coverage, decoder clock behavior, and word coordinates across steady chunks, EOU, and reset.

Summary
Cache-stream frame and clock assertions tests/cpp/asr/test_cache_stream_geometry.cpp
The test checks cumulative emitted frames and decoded Mel coverage across chunks. It also checks the decoder frame clock after reset, at EOU, and after post-EOU processing.
RNNT startup and reset coordinates tests/cpp/asr/test_decoders.cpp
The test checks startup timestamps and cached Mel coverage for right-context values 0, 3, 6, and 13. It also checks coordinates after soft EOU and hard reset, and registers the test in main.
NVIDIA/NeMo-Speech.cpp#46: Changes cache-aware RNNT startup geometry and adds EncoderConfig::cache_decoded_mel_frames(), which PR #78 tests across chunks, EOU, reset, and RNNT coordinates.
Merge Risk: Low · up to d47bf
The current behavior is correct and the change is mergeable, but a runner-level word-coordinate check would better protect startup timestamps against regression.

Explanation
The title is a short, single-sentence conventional-commit style summary of the changeset. The changeset adds tests in tests/cpp/asr for cache-stream geometry and RNNT causal startup coordinates, and the title's 'verify timestamp consumers after #46 startup fix' refers to those tests. The objectives say the PR narrowed to tests for the first and steady causal frontier and absolute RNNT coordinates, and the title names the testing focus, so it matches the main change. It is slightly broad because the description also details fixes that were withdrawn, but it is not misleading.

Summary
This PR adds timestamp regression checks in two existing test files. It makes no production changes.
Streaming geometry tests track real Mel coverage as encoder chunks advance.
RNNT timing tests track word positions separately from Mel coverage.
dashidhy explicitly deferred existing EOF timestamp and audio_processed behavior to keep this follow-up focused on #46. The earlier subtitle finding no longer applies because the changes that caused it were withdrawn.
Review checks were based on source inspection; no tests were run during this review.

fix(asr): bound EOS word times and report decoded progress
test(asr): verify timestamp consumers after #46 startup fix
Oct 25, 2026
Withdraw the independent EOF timestamp, progress-semantic, ITN and subtitle changes from the original NVIDIA#78 revision. Keep only tests for the first/steady causal frontier and absolute RNNT coordinates across EOU and reset. No additional production regression beyond the VAD correction already merged in NVIDIA#46 has been established.

Add a runner-level check for the first-chunk word offset.
The decoder-side startup test and the cache-stream geometry test do not check the offset that CacheStreamRunner passes to the RNNT decoder. A wrong first-chunk offset that keeps the same token count and word order would pass all of them. The integration test checks only that first-word starts are non-decreasing across finals, so a shifted first-chunk start can still pass it.
The current runner passes the correct value, so this is a coverage gap rather than a present defect. Consider adding one word-coordinate assertion on the runner path after the first chunk. Compare the first word's start_frame with an expected emission-frame coordinate. The expected value must come from the fixture's model output or from a derivation the fixture can state independently.
