jsub is only referenced once, so maybe the argument should be syms (or jvars=all.vars(jsub)) instead?

I am still thinking we can combine these two statements e.g.
syms = grepv("^[.][.](?:[^0-9.]|[0-9].*[^0-9])", syms)
