Description

In dark mode, --cl-color-background is now a near-black base that backs the profile shell, and a new --cl-color-surface (derived from it, equal to it in light mode) backs cards, sections, menus, dialogs and controls, so the shell reads recessed and the content raised. The gray ramp, borders, input color and scrollbar now mix into --cl-color-surface, dark borders are slightly stronger (10.5%), and a profile opened in a dialog now draws a border. Destructive outline buttons and menu items now tint red on hover, matching ghost-negative. Apps that override --cl-color-background now recolor only the shell and its derived surface; override --cl-color-surface to recolor cards directly.

📝 Walkthrough

Mosaic adds a dedicated surface color token and changes the dark-mode background and neutral-derived colors. Component styles and SwingSet examples use the surface token. Destructive button and menu states use updated fills. Dialog profile layouts gain a default border, with compact and fullscreen exceptions.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Possibly related PRs

  • clerk/javascript#10375: Both PRs update Mosaic color tokens; this PR adds the surface token and derives related tokens from it.
  • clerk/javascript#10398: This PR updates hover and active backgrounds for negative menu items, including the user-profile Remove avatar action.

Correct the anchored-toast text token.

The anchored toast uses tooltipSurface, whose text color is --cl-color-surface. Update the documentation so consumers override the correct token.

-The anchored toast shares the tooltip surface: `--cl-color-foreground` fill with `--cl-color-background` text.

There is no gray scale. Every achromatic token (`--cl-color-foreground`, `-border`, `-background-subtle`, …) is `--cl-color-neutral` (black on light, white on dark) mixed into `--cl-color-background` at a fixed percentage per mode, so overriding neutral to a warm gray retints the whole ramp; in dark mode override `--cl-color-background` too, since the ramp mixes toward it. The `--cl-<color>-alpha-100|200|300` tokens in `colorVars` are washes (6, 8, and 12 percent of `--cl-color-neutral`, `-negative`, `-positive`, and `-warning` over `transparent`); overriding the solid color retints its washes.

Two tiers carry the dark look. `--cl-color-background` is the base: the shell of a settings surface such as the profile, and the darkest layer (`oklch(0.133 0 0)` in dark mode, white in light mode). `--cl-color-surface` is everything raised on it (cards, sections, menus, popovers, dialogs, controls) and the base the gray ramp mixes into. It is derived, not set: in dark mode it is `--cl-color-neutral` mixed 6.5 percent into `--cl-color-background`, and in light mode it equals `--cl-color-background`. So retinting `--cl-color-background` retints the shell, the surface and the whole ramp together; override `--cl-color-surface` directly only to change how far cards sit above the shell. Both are solid, never alpha, so they look the same over any backdrop.

Correct the documented effect of a surface override.

neutralMix uses --cl-color-surface as the base for the gray ramp and other neutral-derived tokens. Overriding --cl-color-surface therefore changes those tokens as well as card-to-shell contrast. Update the documentation or use a separate ramp base.

Preserve retinting for scoped background overrides.

A descendant that overrides only --cl-color-background can inherit the root-computed --cl-color-surface and neutral-derived tokens. CSS custom properties resolve var() references before inheritance, so those tokens do not recompute for the descendant. This violates the documented retinting contract.

Recompute --cl-color-surface and every token derived from it in the override scope, or update the documentation to require overriding those tokens together with --cl-color-background. Add a nested-scope test for this contract.
