Summary

  • clerk-js now writes both __clerk_db_jwt cookies before stripping stale attribute variants, so a concurrent request never sees a hole during the rewrite.
  • @clerk/backend falls back to the unsuffixed __clerk_db_jwt when the suffixed cookie is missing and suffixed cookies are otherwise in use.

Fixes #10411

Test plan

  • createDevBrowserCookie set() writes both cookies before any remove, and only drops the partitioned variants
  • AuthenticateContext: suffixed session cookies plus only unsuffixed __clerk_db_jwt still yield a dev browser token
  • Existing suffixed-cookie AuthenticateContext cases still pass

clerk-js was deleting both __clerk_db_jwt cookies before writing them again, so concurrent requests on development instances hit clerkMiddleware as signed-out. Write the new cookies first, then drop only stale attribute variants, and fall back to the unsuffixed cookie on the backend when the suffixed one is gone.

📝 Walkthrough

The browser now writes both dev-browser cookie names before removing stale attribute variants. For unpartitioned writes, it does not remove stale variants. Backend token lookup uses usesSuffixedCookies() to choose a preferred cookie and falls back to the other cookie. Tests cover cookie operation order and both backend fallback cases.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: clerk-js rewrites __clerk_db_jwt so no missing-cookie window exists. The changeset writes both cookies before removing stale partitioned variants, which matches the title. The title does not mention the @clerk/backend fallback to the unsuffixed cookie, but that is a secondary part of the change. The title is specific and uses the fix(...) convention.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states both changes: clerk-js writes both __clerk_db_jwt cookies before stripping stale attribute variants, and @clerk/backend falls back to the unsuffixed cookie when the suffixed cookie is missing. It also links issue #10411 and lists the test plan. It is directly related to the changeset.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #10411 requires avoiding an incomplete dev-browser cookie state and supports backend fallback. createDevBrowserCookie.set writes both cookie variants before stale-variant cleanup. It skips cleanup for unpartitioned writes and removes only unpartitioned variants after partitioned writes. AuthenticateContext.initHandshakeValues falls back to __clerk_db_jwt when suffixed cookies are active and the suffixed token is absent. Tests cover write ordering and both cookie-selection cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to the issue-related cookie rewrite, backend token lookup, focused tests, and the patch-release changeset. These changes support issue #10411. No unrelated behavior is demonstrated.

Explanation

It seems that with partitioned cookies turned off, cookies that are partitioned are getting entirely rejected (instead of being set without partitioning as was the previous experience). Interestingly, they seem to get still get set when the dev tools are open making this very tricky to debug.

These integrations were stable and compliant in Safari .4, and if memory serves, the adoption of partitioned cookies followed Safari’s own guidance at the time.

L26: The test app in the radar loads a URL into a webview, uses
L27: WKHTTPCookieStore::getAllCookies to retrieve the cookie that was set, and
L28: then uses WKHTTPCookieStore::deleteCookie to delete the retrieved cookie.
L29: This deletion fails.
L30:
L31: This cookie is set via the Set-Cookie HTTP header (so it is set directly via
L32: CFNetwork and not through a WebKit code path). It is a partitioned cookie.
L33:
L34: When WKHTTPCookieStore::getAllCookies returns the cookies, it strips the
L35: partition attribute by calling clearCookiePartitionPropertyIfNeeded(). Then,
L36: when WKHTTPCookieStore::deleteCookie is called, CFNetwork finds that the stored
L37: cookie doesn't match the passed in the cookie because the stored cookie has a
L38: partition attribute. Since the two cookies don't match, CFNetwork does not
L39: delete
L40: the stored one.
L41:
L42: The behavior of stripping the partition attribute when returning the cookie
L43: was added in 【8†https://commits.webkit.org/300838@main†commits.webkit.org】. Before that patch, the
L44: partition attribute was exposed. We found that this broke the Tableau app that
L45: was retrieving these cookies from a webview, storing them, and then later using
L46: them in an fetch requests via URLSession outside of this webview. These cookies
L47: were being ignored (rightfully) by the networking layer since they had a
L48: partitioned attribute that didn't line up with the requests. Since this was
L49: a regression caused by adding support for partitioned cookies, that patch fixed
L50: this by not exposing the partition attribute via the WKHTTPCookieStore API.
L51:
L52: Unfortunately, it is the reason why deleting partitioned cookies fails today.
L53:
L54: To fix this, we amend the API to once again expose the partition attribute.
L55: To prevent this from breaking the Tableau app as it once did, we won't expose
L56: the attribute for it until it links against future SDKs. In the future, it must
L57: filter out these partitioned cookies should it wish to use them outside the
L58: webview from which it got them.
L59:
L60: This is covered by a new test:

Do not run partitioned cleanup on browsers that do not support Partitioned.

When partitioned is false, set writes unpartitioned cookies and then calls remove(partitionedCookieAttributes). Safari versions that treat Partitioned as unpartitioned can apply that expiry write to the cookie just written, recreating the missing-cookie window. The option is environment-driven, and this path has no browser-support guard. Skip this cleanup when the browser does not support partitioned cookies, and test that the cookies remain after set.

Safari can treat a Partitioned expiry as applying to the cookie we just wrote. Also keep a suffixed __clerk_db_jwt fallback when session cookies are unsuffixed.

Track partitioned and unpartitioned cookie variants in the mock.

remove() ignores its attributes and deletes cookieStore by name. The four unpartitioned cleanup calls therefore delete both entries written by the partitioned set(), while the test checks only operation order. No other test in this file checks that partitioned values survive.

Use separate stores, or include the partitioned state in the store key, and assert both partitioned cookie values remain.

L295: #### After unpartitioned third-party cookies are blocked
L296:
L297: Without the ability to set any cross-site cookies, one alternative that services like `embed.maps.com` have is to use other forms of browser storage (e.g. LocalStorage). In order to detect the presence of these other types of client state, `embed.maps.com` will have to wait for a JavaScript execution context to load before they can access the user preferences: resulting in longer loading times and a worse user experience.
L298: Our goal is for sites like `embed.maps.com` to be able to set a cookie while embedded into `shoes.com` that would only be sent when the user's browser's top-level site is `shoes.com`. If the user navigates to another top-level site, subsequent requests to `embed.maps.com` would not include the cookie set when the top-level site was `shoes.com`. This would enable `embed.maps.com` to store user preferences with cookies without being able to store a cross-site identifier on users' machines.
L317: Our goal is to provide services like `support.chat.com` the ability to set cookies when they are in a third-party context. However, that cookie is only available when the user is browsing the same top-level site that the cookie was set in. This allows `support.chat.com` to have a notion of session within a single top-level site without giving them a cross-site tracking mechanism.
L349: This principle is in line with the 【133†principle of least privilege†en.wikipedia.org】 in the long term. Initially, this new attribute will restrict a cookie's behavior, since it will limit the scope in which cookies can be sent compared to unpartitioned third-party cookies. But, in the long term these cookies will be the only cookies available in cross-party contexts.
L350: Although existing software and APIs will need to be updated to support this new cookie attribute, we believe that an opt-in will be the best way to help move the web from (unpartitioned) third-party cookies without causing unexpected bugs. See the 【76†Partition all third-party cookies by default】 section below for more information.
L351: ### Only sent over secure protocols
L352:
L353: Partitioned cookies must only be set by and sent over secure protocols. This helps address some aspects of cookies' 【134†weak confidentiality†tools.ietf.org】 and 【135†weak integrity†tools.ietf.org】.
L355: One concern about introducing partitioned cookies is the proliferation of state on users' machines. With unpartitioned third-party cookies, a single third party only needed to set one cookie on a user's machine which could be used for cross-site requests across all top-level sites a user visits. After unpartitioned third-party cookies are removed, a third party will need to set one cookie per top-level context that the user visits, resulting in more cookies set on users' machines.
L356: Browsers that wish to support partitioned cookies must impose additional limitations on the number of cookies available to a third-party domain per-partition.
L357:
L358: However, it is also necessary for user agents to design these limits in a way that does not allow malicious third parties from learning cross-site information about users. See 【113†Limit the number of cookies in a partition】 for 【114†Applying the 180 cookies-per-domain limit】 in 【136†Alternative Designs for CHIPS】 for more details.
L359: ## Detailed Design
L360: ### Partitioning model
L361:
L362: Today, cookies are keyed on the hostname or domain of the site that set them, i.e. their host key. After CHIPS, cookies that opt into partitioning will be double-keyed on their partition key and their host key. #### 4.2.2. Semantics

Each cookie-pair represents a cookie stored by the user agent. The
cookie-pair contains the cookie-name and cookie-value the user agent
       received in the Set-Cookie header.

Notice that the cookie attributes are not returned. In particular,
the server cannot determine from the Cookie header alone when a
cookie will expire, for which hosts the cookie is valid, for which
paths the cookie is valid, or whether the cookie was set with the
       Secure or HttpOnly attributes.

The semantics of individual cookies in the Cookie header are not
defined by this document. Servers are expected to imbue these
       cookies with application-specific semantics.

Although cookies are serialized linearly in the Cookie header,
servers SHOULD NOT rely upon the serialization order. In particular,
if the Cookie header contains two cookies with the same name (e.g.,
that were set with different Path or Domain attributes), servers
SHOULD NOT rely upon the order in which these cookies appear in the
       header.

    ## 5. User Agent Requirements

This section specifies the Cookie and Set-Cookie headers in
sufficient detail that a user agent implementing these requirements
precisely can interoperate with existing servers (even those that do
not conform to the well-behaved profile described in Section 4).

Handle the partitioned-to-unpartitioned transition.

When partitioned is false, removeStaleAttributeVariants() returns at lines 65-66. The previous Partitioned variants remain after the unpartitioned values are written. CHIPS permits both variants to coexist, and the Cookie header does not include cookie attributes. The backend therefore cannot distinguish them by partition status, so the stale token can be selected.

Add transition-safe cleanup for the Partitioned variants. Do not remove them blindly, because the existing Safari comment documents that this can expire the new unpartitioned cookie.
