One managed container daemon owns Kubernetes inactivity shutdown. Acknowledged setup/hook/SSH registrations protect live work; release starts a fresh idle interval. Inactivity exits normally.
Terminal pods are replaced before the unchanged-options reuse shortcut. Ownership/observed pod UID guard replacement; bounded deletion preserves the PVC and surfaces API errors. Running pods are reused.
Timeout resolution, disabled/shutdown settings and provider-policy refresh remain intact. Unsupported multi-container/entrypoint topologies are rejected rather than bypassing managed shutdown.
Review corrections
Clean protocol-v3 cutover: obsolete managed health-marker/control/ACK files are removed. Persistent Unix connections hold protection in owner memory, independent of failed filesystem writes.
Registration and acknowledgment precede protected work. Applied results are cached separately from ACK delivery: retries do not reapply transitions/reset idle twice.
Live setup has no arbitrary lease. EOF/death releases only its own hold; owner loss cancels work. Linux admission/pruning requires matching start identity and rejects unreadable identity and terminal Z/X/x states, including unreaped zombies retaining inherited sockets.
Hard128 connections, shared activity96, non-owner UID32/PID16. Owner-carried SSH activity consumes the shared budget, preserving control admission. Pending clients count; unprotected chatter/release/ACK retries cannot renew the bounded deadline.
Denied registration rejects only the incoming SSH connection, preserving existing clients/listener and later recovery. Genuine listener close/cancellation remains terminal.
Mounted trusted daemon config takes precedence over environment fallback. Known-managed missing discovery fails closed; genuinely nonmanaged Docker keeps finite per-connection recording. Old managed owners require stop/start migration, not shims.
Baseline same-container all-UID inactivity authority is intentionally preserved (the prior shared heartbeat was0666). Non-owner activity/release affects only its connection; setup/ready/failed/policy remains root/daemon-owner-only. This is not inter-UID isolation or host/network authority. Independent immutable source/security review approved this exact head/tree, not blanket readiness/topology qualification.

Current-payload Kubernetes proof
Three of519 specs passed in418.972s, one attempt each:
Two idle-stop/resume cycles: new pod UIDs, unchanged workspace/PVC identity and preserved sentinel (171.268s).
Actual postAttachCommand: sleep 80 survives the30-second timeout, then goes idle (124.238s).
Fresh owned HOME/DEVSY_HOME/cache/context, explicit existing DEVSY_AGENT_BINARY, embedded local provider, same private kubeconfig; no rebuild, provider/tool download or new image pull. A temporary uncommitted E2E overlay adds only runtime attestation after every up/resume. Original scenario assertions/deadlines are unchanged.
All five distinct pod creations asserted BOTH deployed /usr/local/bin/devsy and actual managed daemon /proc/PID/exe equal the current Linux hash. The overlay reads the actual owner PID (not assumedPID1), checks live matching start identity before/after and stable generation, and records PodUID/containerID/imageID/node/PID/start/command. Missing identity/hash mismatch fails. Numeric process UID was not captured in these pod attestations; the separately bound native UID/GID/groups proof is not substituted for that measurement.
Source, pair and overlay hashes were unchanged pre/post. Delivery selected the existing local-path override; no private cached agent existed afterward. Ginkgo JSON alone is not presented as binary binding.

Preserved failures and binding correction
Immutable old production SSH Serve/admission overlays failed the denial/control-reserve regressions; corrected paths passed. The strengthened unreaped-zombie case failed against6e process logic, then passed before reaping and again on final Linux-native code.
Lint findings were fixed structurally. An initial outer prek stashed unstaged fixes; its PASS is not counted for them. Corrective staged-snapshot prek passed on exact final tree.
A399s run and earlier6e run reused old e916 private cached agent706ec4b8...; candidate hashes/JSON did not bind the running payload. Those immutable reports remain historical/unbound, not current-head evidence. The corrected fresh-state five-inode run above supersedes them.
Earlier saturation/fixture failures remain logged; rejected OCI starts are not test executions. No assertion/deadline/gate was weakened.
Evidence retained locally at /tmp/devsy-1698-v3/strict-validation-ledger.md, be9-bound-kind.verbatim.log, be9-runtime-attestations.json, report-be9-bound.json, and separately hashed overlay/diff/map/runner. No giant raw logs or secrets are published here.
Unverified / separate gates
Restricted nonroot Kubernetes admission/security layouts; additional/native sidecars/init containers and webhooks; pre-fix upgrade/migration; Devsy Platform routes; Windows runtime/full race suite; combined #1653 remote-access integration. Numeric daemon UID is not a kind-attestation measurement. Proof covers the ordinary single-container kind layout and explicitly exercised native kernel/peer failure paths, not every layout.
No merge, ready transition, issue-closing action or release is authorized by this draft.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Kubernetes workspaces now stop after the configured inactivity period when no tracked SSH sessions or setup work are active. Leave the timeout empty or set it to 0 to disable this behavior.
Resuming a stopped workspace preserves its persistent volume and workspace data.
Active Fleet sessions and SSH connections also count as activity.
Bug Fixes
Setup and hook activity now protects managed workspaces from inactivity shutdown.
Unsupported Kubernetes pod layouts are rejected before existing workspaces are replaced.

Summary
Lifecycle protocol, activity, and monitoring pkg/daemon/agent/*, pkg/config/paths.go, go.mod
The agent package adds lifecycle configuration, activity writers, an acknowledged Unix-socket protocol, client admission controls, and inactivity monitoring.
Container setup and activity wiring cmd/internal/agentcontainer/*, cmd/internal/ssh_server.go, cmd/internal/ssh_activity_linux_test.go, cmd/internal/fleet_server.go
Setup uses lifecycle handshakes and worker-readiness tracking. Hook workers, Fleet sessions, and tracked SSH connections register activity. The daemon runs the lifecycle loop and maps inactivity expiry to exit code 0.
Lifecycle policy and container topology pkg/devcontainer/*, pkg/driver/types.go, pkg/provider/*, providers/kubernetes/provider.yaml, sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/developing-*
Workspace configuration carries effective timeout and lifecycle ownership. Run options and container details carry Dockerless and image-entrypoint topology. Configuration validation rejects unsupported positive-timeout layouts.
Kubernetes pod and PVC lifecycle pkg/driver/kubernetes/*, pkg/devcontainer/kubernetes_recreate_preflight_test.go, e2e/tests/up/provider_kubernetes_inactivity.go, hack/ci/suites.yaml
The Kubernetes driver validates pod topology, refreshes lifecycle configuration, persists run options to PVC metadata, and reconciles terminal or changed pods. Tests cover replacement, resume, inactivity, and supported layouts.

Explanation
The title "fix: stop idle Kubernetes workspaces and recreate terminal pods (#1698)" is a Conventional Commits title that names the two main changes: idle shutdown for Kubernetes workspaces and replacement of terminal pods. The changeset matches both. It adds a managed container daemon that owns inactivity shutdown, and it replaces terminal pods before the unchanged-options reuse shortcut. The title is a single, specific sentence with no file lists or vague wording. The issue reference is acceptable.

The description follows the template's main sections: What and why, issue reference, AI assistance, testing, and notes for reviewers. It explains the problem and the approach in detail. It states that the PR is a draft and must not be merged. It gives extensive verification evidence, including the Kubernetes e2e results. Several template items are not clearly filled in. The 'Type of change' checkboxes are not ticked. The AI assistance section does not name a tool or model, and the template fields for that are missing. The description does not state which checkbox applies for integration tests, though it does describe e2e coverage. The 'Fixes #' line uses 'Refs #1698', which is acceptable but should be confirmed. The checklist items for lint and the CLA are not ticked, although the body reports lint passing. The description is long and dense, which makes the key points harder to find.

A truncated annotation can omit a configured field such as DiskSize. The partial configuration then differs from k.options, so reconciliation deletes the running owned pod instead of returning a metadata error. Return the unmarshal error and do not reconcile the pod when the annotation is malformed.
This defect is pre-existing at the merge base, but the reviewed head retains the same failing path.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 9c80b29c7672); the change keeps it reachable.

Minor · Stop a stale setup, ready, or failed record from overwriting the… · lifecycle_monitor.go:54-68
Stop a stale setup, ready, or failed record from overwriting the newer lifecycle policy.
LifecycleMonitor.Apply writes the global m.timeout and m.armed for every setup, ready, and failed record. The daemon checks only the sequence within one client connection, not the order of records across connections. Each setup invocation sends its own timeout and shutdownAction. When two setup invocations overlap and their policies differ, the record that arrives last sets the daemon policy, even if it came from the older invocation.
Two overlapping setup invocations that use different workspace timeouts can produce this result. For example, a setup that started with a five-minute timeout can send ready after a newer setup with a one-minute timeout. The daemon then keeps the five-minute timeout. A stale shutdownAction: none disables idle stopping entirely until another policy record arrives.
Impact is limited to idle-stop timing in an overlap case that requires a timeout or shutdown change between invocations. Make the policy ordering explicit. Options include tagging each policy write with a monotonic generation from the setup that issued it and rejecting older generations, or applying only the policy from the most recent setup handshake. Choose one approach and cover it with a test that sends an older ready after a newer setup.

Minor · Protect setup before the tunnel ping. · setup.go:99-105
The Kubernetes exec transport does not register lifecycle activity for the setup process. Setup performs the tunnel Ping and parses setup data before beginLifecycle sends LifecycleStateSetup. A reused daemon that is already armed can therefore expire during this interval when no separate client is protected.
Establish setup protection before the tunnel work, and release it on every success, error, cancellation, and early-return path. A timeout on Ping alone does not remove the unprotected interval.

Move setup lifecycle protection in the non-prebuild flow so it begins before
tunnel Ping and setup-data parsing; the current beginLifecycle call is too late
to protect that work. Ensure the protection is released on every success, error,
cancellation, and early-return path.
Minor · Arm the idle timer after the result is sent. · setup.go:365-370
setupPostAttach calls state.lifecycle.ready() before ReportResult sends the result. SSH activity tracks only accepted SSH connections. With a valid timeout below five seconds and no hook worker, the lifecycle can expire before the host receives setup completion.
Keep workers.wait in setupPostAttach, and move only ready() after successful ReportResult completion. Preserve finish(err) for setup and result-send errors.

Minor · Do not make managed startup depend on the activity-file mode. · daemon.go:190-193
Do not make managed startup depend on the activity-file mode.
A managed daemon can run under a supported non-root Kubernetes security context. If an existing /tmp/devsy.activity file belongs to another user, sharedfile.EnsureMode can fail at Chmod. Managed activity uses the lifecycle-owner connection and does not require periodic file writes. Remove this managed-path check so the failure does not block the lifecycle loop or SSH server.
This error does not occur before every task starts: startDaemonTasks starts the process reaper and network server before calling newLifecycleLoop. It does prevent the later lifecycle and SSH tasks from starting.

Cover the managed setup-armed timer, or rename the test.
TestManagedLoopStartsUnarmedUntilSetup creates an unmanaged DaemonConfig{}. It does not exercise the managed branch in newLifecycleLoop, where SetupArmsTimer controls initial arming. A regression in that condition would not change this test's assertions.
The Kubernetes E2E tests provide broader pod-liveness coverage, but they do not directly assert constructor state. Renaming the unit test only corrects its description; it does not close the unit-test coverage gap.

configuredTimeout parses Legacy even when Canonical is set. Therefore, TimeoutInputs{Canonical: "10m", Legacy: "soon"} must return an error containing agent.kubernetes.inactivityTimeout. The isolated mounted-config test creates the fixed ContainerDaemonConfigPath but does not remove or restore it. Later tests in the same container can read this managed config instead of their intended environment configuration.
Later tests can fail with unexpected managed-owner requirements or pass against the wrong configuration source.
This can occur when: The gated root test runs in a suite that subsequently exercises daemon config or tracked SSH without clearing the mounted path.

buffer drops a stale duplicate instead of returning and closing the connection;
preserve the c.done exit behavior and continue processing incoming ACKs.

registers activity through ActivityWriter.Start while the session is active and
releases the registration when the session ends; retain touchActivityFile only

prevent inactivity shutdown.

Summary
Refs #1698. Keep draft; do not merge or mark ready. This does not authorize a release or close release acceptance.
Head:
be9ac0022c86ba0ac4ee3a815d42b5268cb7696a; tree:866365f5509029c0aa3152d2861e2c4c7911d97d. Signed by Samuel K skevetter@pm.me. Fast-forward pushed over SSH to the existing branch; GitHub reports all five new commits verified (reason: valid), including this head.Review corrections
Clean protocol-v3 cutover: obsolete managed health-marker/control/ACK files are removed. Persistent Unix connections hold protection in owner memory, independent of failed filesystem writes.
Verification
Serialized under coordinated resource slots,
GOMAXPROCS=1 GOFLAGS=-p=1:mise run cli:lint:cigo test -count=1 -v -timeout=3m ./pkg/daemon/agent ./cmd/internal/agentcontainer ./cmd/internalgo vetfor those three packagesNative fixtures used the cached repository image, default capabilities, actual unprivileged children,1CPU/1GiB/read-only root/no network. Source/tree/file hashes stayed unchanged. Local strict and runtime logs are retained in the evidence ledger below; no full-race or Windows-runtime pass is claimed.
Current-payload Kubernetes proof
Three of519 specs passed in418.972s, one attempt each:
postAttachCommand: sleep 80survives the30-second timeout, then goes idle (124.238s).Fresh owned HOME/DEVSY_HOME/cache/context, explicit existing
DEVSY_AGENT_BINARY, embedded local provider, same private kubeconfig; no rebuild, provider/tool download or new image pull. A temporary uncommitted E2E overlay adds only runtime attestation after every up/resume. Original scenario assertions/deadlines are unchanged. All five distinct pod creations asserted BOTH deployed
/usr/local/bin/devsyand actual managed daemon/proc/PID/exeequal the current Linux hash. The overlay reads the actual owner PID (not assumedPID1), checks live matching start identity before/after and stable generation, and records PodUID/containerID/imageID/node/PID/start/command. Missing identity/hash mismatch fails. Numeric process UID was not captured in these pod attestations; the separately bound native UID/GID/groups proof is not substituted for that measurement.Source, pair and overlay hashes were unchanged pre/post. Delivery selected the existing local-path override; no private cached agent existed afterward. Ginkgo JSON alone is not presented as binary binding.

/tmp/devsy-1698-v3/strict-validation-ledger.md,be9-bound-kind.verbatim.log,be9-runtime-attestations.json,report-be9-bound.json, and separately hashed overlay/diff/map/runner. No giant raw logs or secrets are published here.Unverified / separate gates
Restricted nonroot Kubernetes admission/security layouts; additional/native sidecars/init containers and webhooks; pre-fix upgrade/migration; Devsy Platform routes; Windows runtime/full race suite; combined #1653 remote-access integration. Numeric daemon UID is not a kind-attestation measurement. Proof covers the ordinary single-container kind layout and explicitly exercised native kernel/peer failure paths, not every layout.
No merge, ready transition, issue-closing action or release is authorized by this draft.
