Summary

  • Adds pkg/platform/instance_test.go: table-style coverage for isReady, isTemplateSynced, and instanceReady (all previously 0% covered).
  • Pins that Sleeping counts as ready, while Pending and empty phases do not.
  • Pins that a TemplateResolved=True condition is required for template sync, that unrelated conditions are ignored, and that SyncOnce overrides a True condition.
  • Test-only: 89 added lines, 0 deleted, 1 file.

Why

Readiness gates decide whether a workspace instance is connected or waited on. Their branches had no coverage, so a regression (e.g. dropping the Sleeping branch or the SyncOnce guard) would pass CI silently.

Validation

  • mkdir -p dist && go test -cover ./pkg/... ./cmd/... (baseline measurement)
  • go test -count=1 -run TestInstanceReadinessSuite -v ./pkg/platform/ (pass)
  • Temporary mutation (dropped Sleeping branch and SyncOnce guard): 2 tests failed as expected; instance.go restored, git diff clean.
  • go test -race -count=3 ./pkg/platform/ (pass)
  • mise run cli:format (exit 0)
  • mise run cli:lint:ci (0 issues)

CodeRabbit CLI

coderabbit review --agent --committed --base-commit 9c80b29c7 completed: 0 findings, reviewed pkg/platform/instance_test.go.

Auto-merge

Eligible: yes. Test-only change; non-test changed-line count is 0. Gate decision left to coordinator.

Next

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Expanded automated test coverage for instance readiness across lifecycle phases, template synchronization conditions, and the requirement that both readiness and synchronization are satisfied.

Add an InstanceFailed rejection assertion to the readiness test.

TestIsReadyRejectsOtherPhases asserts only InstancePending and the empty phase. isReady returns true only for InstanceSleeping and InstanceReady. The API module also declares InstanceFailed. A change that made isReady accept InstanceFailed would still pass every assertion in this suite. A negative assertion for that phase closes this gap.

This is a test-coverage gap. The current isReady already rejects InstanceFailed, so this change does not require a production fix.

Add an Unknown case to the resolved-condition test.

TestIsTemplateSyncedRequiresResolvedTrueCondition checks the absent, False, and True states of InstanceTemplateResolved. It does not check corev1.ConditionUnknown. The current isTemplateSynced returns condition.Status == corev1.ConditionTrue, so an Unknown condition already returns false. A later change that treats any status other than False as synced would still pass this test. One assertion pins the True-only contract.

No code in this repository writes InstanceTemplateResolved or sets ConditionUnknown. This suggestion does not depend on whether an external controller emits Unknown.

Cover the SyncOnce: false branch for a non-nil TemplateRef.

The suite sets a non-nil TemplateRef only with SyncOnce: true. A change that returns false for every non-nil TemplateRef would still pass the suite. After the existing false assertion, clear SyncOnce on the same reference and assert that the resolved condition decides the result. TemplateRef is a pointer, so the field must be cleared in place rather than reassigned.

Add a Pending-with-synced-template case to the instanceReady test.

TestInstanceReadyRequiresPhaseAndTemplateSync checks Pending only with no conditions. In that case isTemplateSynced already returns false, so the phase gate in instanceReady is never the deciding check. Removing the phase gate leaves every assertion in this test passing, and a Pending instance with a synced template would return true unnoticed. The test name states that readiness requires both phase and template sync, so this case should be covered.

Suggested test addition
 func (s *instanceReadinessSuite) TestInstanceReadyRequiresPhaseAndTemplateSync() {
 	s.False(instanceReady(newInstanceWithPhase(storagev1.InstancePending)))
+
+	pending := newInstanceWithPhase(storagev1.InstancePending)

 	instance := newInstanceWithPhase(storagev1.InstanceReady)
 	s.False(instanceReady(instance), "ready phase alone is not enough without template sync")

The production behavior is correct. This is a regression-coverage gap, not a functional defect.

Add a Sleeping case to the instanceReady test.

TestInstanceReadyRequiresPhaseAndTemplateSync calls instanceReady only for InstancePending and InstanceReady. No test in pkg/platform calls instanceReady with InstanceSleeping. TestIsReadyTreatsSleepingAsReady covers only isReady. A change that returns true for Sleeping before the template check would not fail the suite.

The current code is correct. instanceReady calls isTemplateSynced for every phase that passes isReady, so a Sleeping instance without InstanceTemplateResolved=True returns false. The Sleeping exception applies only inside isReady. The added assertions protect this gate from a future regression.

Cover the SyncOnce gate in the instanceReady tests.

TestInstanceReadyRequiresPhaseAndTemplateSync never sets Spec.TemplateRef.SyncOnce. Its ready-phase cases cover a missing TemplateResolved condition and a TemplateResolved=True condition. The only SyncOnce test calls isTemplateSynced directly. No test asserts that instanceReady rejects a SyncOnce instance.

If instanceReady checked TemplateResolved=True directly instead of calling isTemplateSynced, the suite would still pass. The missing-condition case would still return false, and the synced case would still return true. A workspace with a pending one-time template sync would then count as ready. Removing the template check entirely would fail the missing-condition assertion, so this gap applies to a replacement that skips the SyncOnce check.

The current implementation is correct. instanceReady returns false through isTemplateSynced when SyncOnce is set. This is a coverage gap, not a current failure. The test below covers the caller-level behavior.
