Stored XSS via SVG foreignObject in ADK Web Dev UI #5514
Description
Stored XSS via SVG foreignObject in ADK Web Dev UI
Summary
The ADK web development UI (adk web) contains a Stored XSS vulnerability in the SVG image rendering component. The vulnerability allows an attacker to upload a malicious SVG artifact containing a <foreignObject> element with embedded HTML and event handlers. When a developer views this artifact through the dev UI's image dialog, the XSS payload executes in their browser with full access to the developer's session, credentials, and API keys.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 3.1: 6.1)
CWE: CWE-79 — Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation
Status: ✅ Verified & Reproducible
Vulnerability Details
Root Cause
The ADK web dev UI renders SVG content using Angular's bypassSecurityTrustHtml() without any prior sanitization:
Vulnerable Code (src/google/adk/cli/browser/main-7SJG752M.js):
processImageData() {
let imageData = this.data.imageData;
if (imageData.trim().includes("<svg")) {
// Direct bypass of Angular's XSS protection without any sanitization
this.displayContent = this.safeValuesService.bypassSecurityTrustHtml(imageData);
}
}The bypassSecurityTrustHtml() function explicitly disables Angular's built-in XSS sanitizer. Without DOMPurify or equivalent pre-processing, any JavaScript-capable content in the SVG is rendered directly into the DOM.
Why <foreignObject> Works
Three SVG XSS vectors were tested:
| Vector | Status | Reason |
|---|---|---|
|
❌ Blocked | Browser doesn't fire onload on SVG elements inserted via innerHTML |
|
❌ Blocked | HTML spec: ', '', svg_str,
flags=re.IGNORECASE | re.DOTALL)
# Remove event handler attributes
handlers = ['onerror', 'onload', 'onclick', 'onmouseover', 'onmouseout',
'onkeydown', 'onkeyup', 'onchange', 'onsubmit', 'onfocus', 'onblur']
for handler in handlers:
pattern = handler + r'\s*=\s*["\']?[^"\'> ]*["\']?'
svg_str = re.sub(pattern, '', svg_str, flags=re.IGNORECASE)
return svg_str
async def load_artifact(...) -> Optional[types.Part]:
artifact = await self.artifact_service.load_artifact(...)
if not artifact:
raise HTTPException(status_code=404, detail="Artifact not found")
# Sanitize SVG before returning
if (artifact and hasattr(artifact, 'inline_data') and artifact.inline_data
and getattr(artifact.inline_data, 'mime_type', '') == 'image/svg+xml'):
try:
data = artifact.inline_data.data
svg_str = base64.b64decode(data).decode('utf-8')
clean_svg = _sanitize_svg_content(svg_str)
artifact.inline_data.data = base64.b64encode(clean_svg.encode()).decode()
except Exception as e:
logger.warning(f"SVG sanitization skipped: {e}")
return artifactOption B: Frontend with DOMPurify
Add DOMPurify to package.json and update processImageData():
import DOMPurify from 'dompurify';
processImageData(imageData: string): SafeHtml {
if (imageData.trim().includes("<svg")) {
const cleanSVG = DOMPurify.sanitize(imageData, {
USE_PROFILES: { svg: true },
FORBID_TAGS: ['foreignObject', 'script', 'iframe'],
FORBID_ATTR: ['onerror', 'onload', 'onclick', 'onmouseover'],
ALLOW_DATA_ATTR: false,
KEEP_CONTENT: true
});
return this.sanitizer.bypassSecurityTrustHtml(cleanSVG);
}

@jeongbeannnn bypassSecurityTrustHtml() on raw SVG with no prior sanitization is definitely the root cause here.
A workaround worth trying: in load_artifact() (adk_web_server.py, ~line 1683), sanitize the SVG before it's returned to the client — stripping , , and inline event handler attributes (onerror, onload, etc.) should cover the three vectors you documented.
Could you test this against your PoC and confirm it holds up on your end?

the Docker parallel-run approach with 5 consistent iterations is exactly the kind of evidence needed before this lands.
One thing to flag before #5515 merges: the regex denylist only covers ~9 event handlers, but HTML has 100+. Vectors like onanimationend, ontransitionend, onpointerenter, and xlink:href="javascript:..." on or
elements would slip through.
CDATA sections (...) and XML namespace variants (svg:foreignObject, foo:script) also won't be matched by the current tag-name regexes.
For a production-grade fix, replace the regex chain with a strict allowlist via XML parsing: parse with defusedxml.ElementTree, walk the element tree, and strip any element or attribute not on a known-safe list. nh3 is a solid choice for this — unknown elements and attributes are dropped by default rather than matched by an ever-growing denylist.
That's the only approach that's actually complete.
For #5515 specifically, it's worth including unit tests with at least the CDATA bypass and an xlink:href="javascript:..." case alongside the PoC payload.
We are happy to take a look at the PR once those are in!
Also worth opening a separate issue for the unauthenticated artifact upload endpoint — fixing the XSS doesn't close that injection path, and it deserves its own tracking.

@jeongbeannnn The nh3 switch is the right call — a strict allowlist means any unknown attribute or future event handler is blocked automatically without maintaining a denylist.
The 7-vector parametrized suite covers exactly what was flagged.
Three things worth verifying before #5515 lands:
1. Fix location: The implementation report lists src/google/adk/tools/load_artifacts_tool.py as the changed file, but the PR's test file is under tests/unittests/cli/ — which suggests the sanitization may actually live in adk_web_server.py.
The critical path for the XSS is the GET endpoint at /apps/{app}/users/{user}/sessions/{session}/artifacts/{artifact_name} in adk_web_server.py (~line 1676) — that's what the Angular dialog calls directly. Sanitizing only in the LLM tool pipeline would leave the browser-facing endpoint unprotected.
Could you confirm the nh3.clean() call is wired into that load_artifact() response before it's returned to the client?
2. Plain href vector: The tests cover xlink:href="javascript:..." which is correct for SVG 1.1, but SVG 2 and modern browsers also support plain href on , , and
elements — and javascript: is equally valid there.
Worth adding one test case (e.g., click) to confirm nh3's protocol validation catches both attribute forms.
3. Allowlist completeness: If ALLOWED_SVG_TAGS is narrowly defined, legitimate SVG content using , , , , , , , , or will be silently stripped on render.
The current test_sanitize_svg_preserves_safe_content only validates circle, rect, path, text, and basic attributes — a round-trip test with a real-world SVG (a Material icon or a gradient-based chart) would catch any gaps before they become user-visible regressions.
On the unauthenticated endpoint — agreed, tracking it separately is the right call.

Here's the verification:
Fix Verification: SVG XSS Vulnerability Addressed in PR #5515
Summary
This SVG XSS vulnerability has been successfully addressed in PR #5515. The fix uses nh3-based strict allowlist sanitization instead of regex denylist, providing comprehensive protection against all identified attack vectors. All 13 unit tests pass, including 3 new tests addressing the specific concerns raised during review.
Solution: nh3-Based SVG Sanitization
Problem: Regex denylist could only cover ~9 event handlers; 100+ exist in HTML5. CDATA sections, XML namespaces, and protocol-based XSS (javascript: URLs) were not protected.
Fix: Strict allowlist approach using nh3 library:

Full details available in PR #5515:
This vulnerability is now fixed and ready for merge.
surajksharma07 commentedon May 18, 2026
@jeongbeannnn fix location is confirmed correct — load_artifact() (~line 1692) and load_artifact_version() (~line 1732) in adk_web_server.py are the direct callers the Angular image dialog hits, and protecting both endpoints is exactly right.
The plain href test (SVG 2) and the three real-world SVG tests with linearGradient/radialGradient/clipPath close the remaining gaps cleanly — 13/13 looks good from here.
One small check before merge: nh3 strips data: protocol URLs by default, so
inside an SVG would have its href silently removed.
If SVG artifacts with embedded raster images are a realistic use case in the dev UI, worth a quick round-trip test to confirm those aren't broken.
If data:image/... is out of scope here, PR #5515 is ready for merge review!
jeongbeannnn commentedon May 21, 2026
@surajksharma07
Thanks for the careful review!
Good catch on the
data:protocol behavior — confirmed nh3 strips it by default, and our current_sanitize_svg_for_web()doesn't overrideurl_schemes, so
would lose its href silently.After thinking about scope: I'd argue embedded raster images via
data:URIs are out of scope for the dev UI sanitizer, for three reasons:image/png/image/jpegblobs, not embedded inside SVG.url_schemesparameter is applied globally across all elements. Allowingdata:element-selectively (e.g. permit on
but not on) requires either nh3'surl_filtercallback or a post-pass — extra logic on a path with no concrete consumer today. Andis still a defense-in-depth concern even though modern Chrome/Firefox block top-level navigation todata:URLs — iframe/embed and some nested contexts remain exploitable.If a concrete use case for embedded
data:image/*shows up later, we can address it in a follow-up by adding aurl_filterthat only permitsdata:image/*on
while keepingrestricted.From my side I think this is ready, but happy to iterate if you disagree on the scope call — and I can open a tracking issue for the
data:image/*case either way.surajksharma07 commentedon May 25, 2026
@jeongbeannnn The scope reasoning is solid — ADK surfaces raster images as their own image/* blobs rather than embedded inside SVG, so silently dropping data: on
isn't a realistic regression in the dev UI. Keeping data: blocked is the right conservative default given the risk.
If you can open a tracking issue for the data:image/* url_filter follow-up, that'd be good housekeeping so it doesn't get lost.
Team is looking more into it.
jeongbeannnn commentedon May 26, 2026
@surajksharma07
Thanks for the read on scope — agreed, blocking data: wholesale is the safer floor for the dev UI right now.
Opened #5851 to track the data:image/* filter follow-up so it doesn't drift. I sketched the allow/block split and a few test cases in there; happy to pick it up once the team's investigation lands on a filter shape you want.
Pinging back here once that's in.
surajksharma07 commentedon Jun 4, 2026
@jeongbeannnn #5851 is the right place for that — the allow/block split you sketched there (permit data:image/* on
via nh3's url_filter callback, keep restricted) is exactly the shape that makes sense, and having the test cases drafted up front will make the follow-up PR straightforward when the team lands on the filter shape.
From this issue's perspective everything is tracked: the XSS vulnerability itself is addressed in #5515 (nh3-based allowlist at both load_artifact() and load_artifact_version() in adk_web_server.py, 13/13 tests covering all 8 vectors plus real-world SVG round-trips), and the one residual edge case has its own issue.
The one remaining gate on the PR side is confirming CI is green after the latest push (cf72d4a) — rohityan's failing-test comment predates that rewrite, so the nh3 version should clear it, but a clean check run is the final step before the merge review can proceed.
Once that's confirmed, #5515 should be in good shape for the maintainers to land.
This issue will close when the PR merges — nothing more needed from your side in the meantime.
Thanks for seeing all the review rounds through!
jeongbeannnn commentedon Jul 23, 2026
Hi, I’ve rebased the PR onto the latest main branch and resolved the merge conflicts. The tests are passing locally. Could you please review it when you have a chance? Thank you!
surajksharma07 commentedon Jul 28, 2026
@jeongbeannnn thanks for the rebase — good to keep it current on main!
One update since my last comment: the PR assignment moved to @haranrk on Jun 17, so they're the right person to ping for the review pass now rather than the earlier reviewers.
Rohityan's "fix the failing tests" comment is from May 8, before the nh3 rewrite (cf72d4a) landed, so that should already be moot.
I can't independently confirm the post-rebase CI status from here though (the checks section isn't loading on my end) — could you confirm the check run is green after the rebase?
Once that's visible, this should be ready for @haranrk to do the merge review!
Team is looking more into it.
Thanks!
