Summary

PWL-01 step 5, on the panll side. A clade's resource contract is now graded in typed-wasm's Idris2 grade kernel, which is imported at a pin and not re-declared:

  • panel state is graded by occupancy (HWM);
  • the Panel-N → Panel-W crossing is graded by loss (Loss).

Also in this PR: one graded contract (neurosym-bridge), the {grade, algebra} wire schema for TypeLL, and a CI job that actually typechecks the module.

Kernel pin: typed-wasm main 117bbf8. That is hyperpolymath/typed-wasm#274; the kernel itself landed in #271, and #273 added its Nat lemmas.

Finding: panel-clades/src/abi/{Types,Layout,Foreign}.idr have never typechecked:

  • their module names don't match their paths;
  • laid out correctly, Types.idr still has 11 errors;
  • yet their README claimed "Verified by Idris2 0.8.0", with every proof CLOSED.

So the acceptance line "panel-clades ABI typechecks against the ported kernel" holds for the new module only. The three existing files are reported here, not fixed; details below.

Changes

  • panel-clades/src/abi/PanelClades/ABI/Grades.idr:

    • StateWithin and phasesWithin: the reclamation law at the panel (a second phase fits in what the first left). Uses the kernel's maxLub.
    • LossWithin: total collapse is never within tolerance.
    • crossTwice: losses add (the kernel's lossSeq).
    • betterOfTwo: keep the less lossy translation (lossAlt).
    • CladeResourceContract, with its TaggedGrade {grade, algebra} pairs.
    • The neurosym-bridge contract: state peak 48 / drift 16 within a budget of 64; crossing loss 2 within a tolerance of 3. These are declared values for you to confirm, not measurements, so the contract is DESIGNED.
    • A computed witness: two panel phases occupy 64 but cost 96 under max-plus.
  • panel-clades/scripts/fetch-siblings.sh (the pin) and panel-clades/scripts/check-abi.sh (the gate). The gate:

    • builds the kernel at the pin;
    • builds panel-clades-grades.ipkg against it;
    • runs tests/reject/{OverBudget,CollapseWithinTolerance}.idr.

    A missing toolchain fails the gate; it never skips.

  • CI: job panel-clades-abi in build-validation.yml, with Idris2 0.8.0 built from its tag.

  • schema/typell-grade.schema.json: the {grade, algebra} payload, with algebra ∈ loss / maxplus / hwm. DESIGNED: the Panel-L ↔ TypeLL JSON-RPC wiring doesn't exist yet (TypeLLService/TypeLLCmd are stubs).

  • Docs: the check status in the panel-clades ABI README (with SPDX header), a pointer from the TypeLL clade README, CHANGELOG.

Status (artefact for each)

Claim Status Artefact
Grades lemmas (phasesWithin, crossTwice, betterOfTwo) PROVEN idris2 --build panel-clades-grades.ipkg against the pinned kernel
Occupancy ≠ cost at the panel (64 vs 96) TESTED (computed) panelPhasesOccupancy, panelPhasesCost
Over-budget state / collapsed crossing refused TESTED tests/reject/*.idr
neurosym-bridge contract values DESIGNED declared values in Grades.idr
{grade, algebra} on the TypeLL wire DESIGNED schema/typell-grade.schema.json
Types/Layout/Foreign.idr typecheck does not hold src/abi/README.adoc, "Check status"

The pre-existing ABI errors (not fixed here)

  1. Module PanelClades.ABI.Types lives at src/abi/Types.idr, so Idris2 refuses all three files outright (Module name … does not match file name).
  2. Moved to matching paths, Types.idr still has 11 errors:
    • %runElab without %language ElabReflection;
    • DecEq without import Decidable.Equality (×2);
    • So auto-proofs for runtime values (createHandle, mkCladeId);
    • Bits (ptrSize p) used as a type (CPtr);
    • pattern matching on types (cSizeOf, cAlignOf);
    • allCladeKinds / cladeKindExhaustive, where cladeKindCount is auto-bound as a variable.

Some of these need redesign rather than a one-line fix. Whether to fix them in a follow-up is your call.

CI on this PR

The new job is Build Validation / panel-clades-abi. Every other red check is red on main (787ac2e) too, for reasons outside this diff:

Check Cause (from the log) On main
Build Validation / validate deno task couldn't find deno.json(c) or package.json (ReScript build gate) red, same step
Rust CI / Cargo check no matching package named gossamer-rs (path dependency on a sibling checkout that CI doesn't make) red
Governance / Actions lockfile verify no .github/workflows/actions.lock; the grace window closed on 2026-10-01 red
Governance / Workflow security linter main-estate-audit.yml lacks an SPDX header and a top-level permissions: red
Dogfood Gate / K9 contracts 117 config.k9.ncl files lack the K9! magic line red
Central Estate Audit / Code Hygiene unlinked TODO markers in src/update/*.affine (none in this diff; its proof-circumvention scan found none) red

CodeFactor reported one issue. Running shellcheck locally on this PR's scripts found SC2164 (unguarded cd in a script without set -e) and SC2181. Both are fixed in a188675, and shellcheck is now clean on both scripts. Each of the gate's failure branches was re-checked with an idris2 shim.

Testing

bash panel-clades/scripts/check-abi.sh
Idris 2, version 0.8.0
typed-wasm at 117bbf895b513673ba06eb6c4ebb0e26e276e295
PASS: typed-wasm grade kernel built at 117bbf8
PASS: panel-clades-grades.ipkg builds against the kernel (1 module(s), 0 errors)
PASS: rejected CollapseWithinTolerance at line 17 (Mismatch between: Finite .* and Infinity)
PASS: rejected OverBudget at line 17 (Mismatch between: 0 and 16)

OK: panel-clades grades ABI — builds against the kernel, 2 rejection(s)

Mutation checks:

  • lowering the contract's budget from 64 to 40 makes the gate exit 1 (build refused; the rejections flagged as failing for the wrong reason);
  • an idris2 shim that refuses the kernel build, or prints Error: but exits 0, makes the gate exit 1.

PanelClades.ABI.Grades grades a clade's resource contract in typed-wasm's
Idris2 grade kernel (TypedWasm.ABI.ResourceAlgebra, transcribed from
hyperpolymath/resource-algebra), imported at a pin, not re-declared:

  - panel state by OCCUPANCY (HWM): StateWithin, and phasesWithin, the
    reclamation law at the panel (a second phase fits in what the first
    left);
  - the Panel-N -> Panel-W crossing by LOSS: LossWithin (total collapse is
    never within tolerance), crossTwice (losses add, lossSeq), betterOfTwo
    (the less lossy translation, lossAlt);
  - CladeResourceContract, its {grade, algebra} pairs (TaggedGrade), and the
    neurosym-bridge contract: state peak 48 / drift 16 within 64, crossing
    loss 2 within 3. DESIGNED: declared values for the owner to confirm,
    not measurements;
  - the computed separation at the panel: two phases occupy 64 but cost 96.

panel-clades/scripts/fetch-siblings.sh pins typed-wasm at main 9403258
(the kernel's landing, typed-wasm#271).  panel-clades/scripts/check-abi.sh
builds the kernel there, builds panel-clades-grades.ipkg against it (exit 0
and no Error line), and requires tests/reject/{OverBudget,
CollapseWithinTolerance}.idr to be refused at their invalid declarations
for the intended reason. It runs as job panel-clades-abi in
build-validation.yml (Idris2 0.8.0 built from its tag; no binaries exist).

schema/typell-grade.schema.json is the {grade, algebra} wire payload for
TypeLL (DESIGNED: the Panel-L JSON-RPC wiring is not built).

The ABI README said "Verified by: Idris2 0.8.0 type checker" with every
proof CLOSED.  Checked today: Types.idr / Layout.idr / Foreign.idr do not
typecheck. Their module names (PanelClades.ABI.*) do not match their
paths, so Idris2 refuses them outright, and laid out at matching paths
Types.idr still has 11 errors (ElabReflection not enabled, DecEq without
Decidable.Equality, unprovable So auto-proofs, Bits used as a type,
pattern matching on types, an auto-bound cladeKindCount). The README now
says which module does typecheck (Grades.idr, via scripts/check-abi.sh) and
lists those errors; fixing them is left to the owner, as some need
redesign. Also: SPDX header on that README, a pointer from the TypeLL
clade README to the grade schema, and a CHANGELOG entry.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added verifiable resource contracts for state occupancy and crossing losses, with an example showing occupancy within budget while total cost exceeds it.
    • Added a schema describing graded values and their associated algebra.
  • Documentation
    • Documented which ABI checks are verified, and noted modules that do not currently typecheck.
    • Clarified that grade data is not yet emitted or checked at runtime, and that JSON-RPC wiring is not yet available.
  • Chores
    • Added automated ABI checks to the build workflow, including tests that confirm invalid contracts are rejected.

The change adds typed grades and resource-contract proofs for clade occupancy and crossing loss. It defines a TypeLL schema for graded values and adds scripts and a GitHub Actions job to check the grades package and expected rejection fixtures.

Change: Feature

Suggested reviewers: metadatastician

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a1886

The grade checks have no established blocking defect, but a build failure may be harder to diagnose and the CI dependencies warrant limited hardening. The change is mergeable with those follow-ups.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a1886

The new validation pipeline adds low-risk CI trust and supply-chain boundaries alongside the graded ABI contract. Its repository permission is read-only, but the validation job should avoid exposing credentials to checked-out code and should make external toolchain inputs immutable.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The new pull-request validation path checks out repository code with persisted read credentials and then executes the checked-out ABI script, crossing from contributor-controlled repository content into the CI credential context.
  • Low · security · inferred: The new validation workflow builds Idris2 from the mutable v0.8.0 tag, so a changed upstream tag can alter the compiler executed by CI without a deliberate repository change or immutable toolchain identity.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently attackable scope is limited by read-only repository permission, but a contributor able to influence checked-out validation code can target the job's persisted checkout credential context.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A changed or malicious pull-request script can execute after checkout and access persisted Git credentials; separately, a retargeted Idris2 release tag can change the compiler source that CI builds and executes.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The workflow's contents-read permission constrains repository-token authority, and sibling source is fetched from public HTTPS at a detached typed-wasm commit.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Disable checkout credential persistence for this validation-only job unless a later step demonstrably requires authenticated Git access.
  • proposed — Resolve the Idris2 v0.8.0 release to an immutable commit and verify that identity before building it, consistent with the detached commit approach used for typed-wasm.

typed-wasm #273 and #274 have merged, so the pin moves from 9403258 (the
kernel's landing, #271) to main 117bbf8. #273 added maxLub to the
kernel's Nat lemmas, so Grades.idr's local copy (maxLeast) goes and
phasesWithin uses the kernel's. check-abi.sh passes at the new pin
(1 module, 0 errors, 2 rejections).

…ild directly

shellcheck SC2164 and SC2181, the likely source of CodeFactor's one
finding on #145. The script runs without `set -e` (it collects
failures), so a failed cd would have carried on in the wrong directory.
The kernel-build test now checks the subshell's status directly. Both
failure branches still fail the gate (checked with an idris2 shim that
refuses the build, and one that prints Error: but exits 0).

Same defect CodeRabbit found in panll's copy of this job
(hyperpolymath/panll#145, CWE-494): a tag can move. The job now fetches
15a3e4e70843f7a34100f6470c04b791330788df (what v0.8.0 names), checks
HEAD against it, and tags it v0.8.0 locally so the Makefile reports the
release version rather than 0.8.0-<sha>. actions.lock is unaffected (no
action reference changed).

This merged at a188675, a minute before the fix commit for the three CodeRabbit threads (42dbbbe) was pushed. Those fixes (Idris2 pinned by commit, persist-credentials: false, and the log tail on an Error-less failure) are therefore not on main yet. They land in #146.

… gate exits if cd fails (#275)

## Summary

Two small fixes to the merged PWL-01 work.

1. **`Occupancy.WithinMaximum` didn't bound a private memory's initial
allocation.** CodeRabbit reported it on #273
(`Occupancy.idr:185`) and nobody answered before the merge.
- `UnderMaximum` asked only that the run's peak fit the declared
maximum. An empty run has peak 0, so `\pm, m, prf => UnderMaximum prf
LTEZero` certified **every** private memory with a maximum.
- That includes `MkPrivateMemory o n 2 (Just 1)`, which already exceeds
its maximum when it is allocated.
- Reproduced first: that declaration typechecks against main `117bbf8`.
2. **`tools/check-kernel-proofs.sh` could carry on after a failed `cd`**
(shellcheck SC2164). The gate runs without `set -e`, because it collects
failures instead of stopping. A failed `cd` would have left `rm -rf
"$OUT"`, `rm -rf src/abi/build` and every relative path resolving from
the caller's directory. CodeFactor found the same defect in panll's copy
of the pattern (hyperpolymath/panll#145).

## Changes

- `src/abi/TypedWasm/ABI/Occupancy.idr`: `UnderMaximum` now also takes
`LTE pm.initial m`. `peak g` stays the run's absolute live-state peak,
and the doc comment says so.
- New reject `tests/reject/InitialOverMaximum.idr`, which states the old
general claim with the new constructor. It is refused at the initial
bound (`Can't solve constraint between: 0 and pm .initial`).
- `LEVEL-STATUS` row 13 and `tests/reject/README.adoc` name the fixture.
The binding stays **DESIGNED**; no status moves.
- `tools/check-kernel-proofs.sh`: `cd "$(dirname "$0")/.." || exit 1`.
- `CHANGELOG`: a Fixed entry for both.

The other PWL-01 scripts are already shellcheck-clean:
`check-grade-kernel.sh`, `scripts/fetch-siblings.sh` and
`tests/transcription/gen.sh`. `tools/check-contract.sh` has the same
SC2164; it predates PWL-01 and is left alone here.

## RSR Quality Checklist

### Required

- [x] Tests pass (see Testing)
- [x] Code is formatted
- [x] Linter is clean: Idris2 build warnings unchanged (24); shellcheck
clean on the PWL-01 scripts
- [x] No banned language patterns
- [x] No `unsafe` blocks without `// SAFETY:` comments
- [x] No banned functions
- [x] SPDX license headers present on all new/modified source files
- [x] No secrets, credentials, or `.env` files included

### As Applicable

- [x] Documentation updated (`LEVEL-STATUS` row 13, reject README)
- [x] `CHANGELOG` updated
- [x] ABI changes validated: `contract.abi.sha256` unchanged (its
anchors cover only the wire format)

## Testing

```
tools/check-kernel-proofs.sh   OK: kernel proofs — build, 10 rejection(s), table, and 3 negative control row(s)
  PASS: idris2 --build typed-wasm.ipkg: 32 module(s) built, 0 errors
  PASS: rejected InitialOverMaximum at line 24 (Can't solve constraint between: 0 and pm \.initial)
tools/check-grade-kernel.sh    OK: one definition of min-plus (ResourceAlgebra/Loss.idr) and one of max-plus (ResourceAlgebra/MaxPlus.idr); no Nat min/max outside base
tools/check-contract.sh        OK: contract gate — I1 + I3 hold
node tests/proof/regression.mjs --strict   202 passed, 0 failed, 0 skipped
E2E_BUILD=0 bash tests/e2e.sh              E2E validation PASSED
```

Negative control: the same declaration with the old two-argument
`UnderMaximum` typechecks against main `117bbf8` (exit 0, no `Error:`).

…oken, shows the log tail (#146)

## Summary

This carries CodeRabbit's three review findings on
#145. #145 was merged at `a188675`, a minute before
the fix commit (`42dbbbe`) was pushed, so the fixes never reached
`main`. The three review threads on #145 say "fixed in 42dbbbe"; this PR
is where that commit lands.

## Changes

- **`build-validation.yml` / `panel-clades-abi`:**
- **Idris2 is fetched by commit, not by tag (CWE-494).** The job now
fetches `15a3e4e70843f7a34100f6470c04b791330788df` (the commit `v0.8.0`
names) and checks `HEAD` against it. Then it tags that commit `v0.8.0`
locally: without a tag, Idris2's Makefile reports the version as
`0.8.0-<sha>`.
- **The checkout sets `persist-credentials: false`.** Nothing in the job
needs the token after checkout, because the sibling fetch is anonymous
https.
- **`panel-clades/scripts/check-abi.sh`:** both build branches (kernel
and grades) print the log tail when `idris2` fails without an `Error`
line, for example on an INTERNAL ERROR. Before, they printed nothing.

The branch merges `main` (#145's squash) instead of being force-pushed,
so the diff against `main` is only these two files.

## Testing

- Fetch, verify and tag were run locally against GitHub. The pinned SHA
checks out, and the Makefile's `GIT_SHA1` is `15a3e4e70` before the
local tag and empty after it.
- shellcheck is clean on `check-abi.sh`.
- `bash panel-clades/scripts/check-abi.sh` → `OK: panel-clades grades
ABI — builds against the kernel, 2 rejection(s)`.
- Control: an idris2 shim that fails with only an INTERNAL ERROR line
now has that line printed before `FAIL: panel-clades-grades.ipkg (exit
1)`.

The other red checks are the same pre-existing ones listed on #145, all
red on `main` too: `validate` (no `deno.json`), Rust CI (`gossamer-rs`
path dependency), the Governance lockfile and workflow linter, K9
contracts, and the estate-audit hygiene gate. CodeRabbit's
docstring-coverage warning counts the four one-line bash helpers
(`pass`, `err`, `die`, `fetch`); I've left it as is.
