🔌 Plugin overview

  • Plugin name: Healthchecks.io
  • Purpose / problem solved: Brings Healthchecks.io cron job and heartbeat monitoring into SquaredUp: live check status (up, late, down, paused, new), up/down history with outage periods, and the ping log for each check. Self-hosted Healthchecks instances work too, through a configurable server URL.
  • Primary audience (e.g. platform teams, SREs, product teams): Platform, ops and engineering teams who use Healthchecks.io to watch scheduled jobs, backups and background workers.
  • Authentication method(s) (e.g. OAuth, Username/Password, API Key): Project API key in the X-Api-Key header. Read-only and read-write keys both work, and I recommend read-only because the plugin never writes. The ping log is the one thing that needs a read-write key.

What it provides

  • Checks and Tags are indexed, and a plugin correlation rule links them (Check has tag Tag). Tags are a multi-value property on each check, so scopes like "all checks tagged prod" work too.
  • Three data streams. Checks lists every check in one request, with optional Filter by check and Filter by tag pickers (the tag filter goes to the API). Status History turns Healthchecks.io's status changes into up/down periods clipped to the timeframe, so one stream gives both an availability split and an outage list. Pings is the ping log for a check, including job run time when the job sends a /start signal.
  • Three dashboards: a project-wide Overview, a Check perspective and a Tag perspective.

🧪 Test plan

I deployed the plugin to a SquaredUp tenant and tested it against a real Healthchecks.io project with 8 daily cron checks across two tags.

  • Added data sources with both a read-write and a read-only key. Config validation passes for both, and both import 8 checks and 2 tags.
  • Tested every data stream live on both keys, comparing results across different checks. Status History works with the read-only unique_key ids, and Pings shows a clear "needs a read-write API key" message on a read-only key. Healthchecks.io returns an HTML 404 rather than a 401 there, so the error handler detects the read-only id itself. A deleted check gives "Check not found".
  • Confirmed the tag picker sends ?tag= to the API (one tag returns 3 checks; two tags require both, as Healthchecks.io does) and the check picker narrows to the selected checks.
  • Confirmed in the graph that checkTags is stored as a multi-value property and that the has tag edges exist on a newly added data source (5 checks to pg_cron, 3 to worker).
  • Opened all three dashboards on the tenant, and walked through the setup form, the tile editor, the graph relationships and the drilldowns. Paused a check to confirm the Paused count, the status and the Status History all reflect it.

⚠️ Known limitations

  • The ping log needs a read-write key, and read-only keys also get no links to checks in Healthchecks.io (the API leaves the check UUID out).
  • Job run time only appears for jobs that send a /start ping first. Most plain cron setups don't, so the Check perspective charts ping results per day rather than duration.
  • Status History covers about three months, matching Healthchecks.io's flip retention, and paused periods show as down because the API only reports up or not up.
  • One project per data source, since API keys are per project. The plugin's correlation rule links checks and tags within a data source only (that's how plugin rules are scoped), so the same tag in two projects isn't joined. Once this merges I'd like to add a rule to the correlation repo to join tags across projects.
  • Rate limit: Healthchecks.io allows 100 requests a minute per project. Status History and Pings make one request per check, so the Overview only uses the single-request Checks stream.

Healthchecks.io is a cron job and heartbeat monitoring service with no
SquaredUp integration. This adds a low-code plugin built on its
Management API v3, so check status, up/down history and ping logs can
sit alongside other monitoring data. A configurable server URL also
covers self-hosted Healthchecks instances.

API keys are scoped to one project, so each data source is one
project. Both key types are supported and read-only is recommended:
the plugin never writes, and a read-only key covers everything except
the ping log. Read-only keys identify checks by `unique_key` instead of
`uuid`; checks are indexed by whichever is present, since both are
accepted by the check and flips endpoints. The ping log route only
matches UUIDs, so a read-only key gets an HTML 404 rather than a 401;
the pings error handler detects a `unique_key` scope and explains that
a read-write key is needed.

Checks are the only first-class entity in the API. The `checks` stream
lists them in one request and serves import, config validation, the
overview and the Check perspective through optional check and tag
pickers. Flips and pings only exist per check, so `statusHistory` and
`pings` are scoped one request per check, matching how Pingdom and
other per-object endpoints are modelled. Status history turns flips
into up/down periods clipped to the timeframe, so one stream gives both
an availability split and an outage list.

Tags are imported as their own objects and related to checks with a
`has tag` correlation rule. The check's tags use the array shape so a
single column drives display, filtering, the multi-value `checkTags`
graph property and the `objectPropertyPath` read-back in the per-check
streams. `tags` is a reserved vertex property, hence `checkTags`.

Job duration is only recorded for pings that follow a `/start` signal,
which plain cron setups rarely send. The Check perspective therefore
charts ping results per day rather than duration, and duration stays
in the recent pings table.

The plugin is additive and isolated. Owners should be aware that the server URL accepts http:// while sending an API key, and that read-only check links rely on a badge-URL-derived fallback that has not been confirmed against the live API. Neither blocks merge.

Read-only keys identify a check by `unique_key` and read-write keys by
`uuid`, so switching a data source from one to the other re-created
every check and broke dashboards scoped to specific checks. That switch
is a natural path, because the README recommends starting read-only and
the ping log needs read-write.

Healthchecks.io derives `unique_key` as the SHA-1 of the first 16 hex
digits of the UUID, so the checks script now computes it for read-write
keys with `crypto.subtle` and uses it as the id for both key types. I
checked the derived values against what a read-only key returns for the
same project. The flips endpoint accepts `unique_key` with either key,
but the ping log route only accepts UUIDs, so the UUID is indexed as its
own property for `pings`, and the pings error handler now detects a
read-only key by that property being absent.

Read-only checks also get a link now, through Healthchecks.io's
`/cloaked/<unique_key>/` route (which sends a signed-in user to the
check), rooted on `badge_url` so self-hosted instances under a subpath
keep it. The unused ping `body_url` column is dropped.

A `dir/*` pattern only matches files directly inside the directory, so
the entry didn't apply to anything under `v1/`.
